Congratulations to four Charlotte Christian upper school students for their winning entries in the NCSDA Congressional Essay Contest!

Founded in 1891, the National Society of Colonial Dames of America (NCSDA) helps to tell America’s many stories, amplify women’s voices and serve as stewards of historic properties. In 1977, the NCSDA introduced the Congressional Essay Contest, which is open to high school students. Students who enter the contest have the opportunity to win a scholarship to attend the Workshop Foundation’s Congressional Seminar in Washington, D.C.

Juniors in Mrs. Amy Abbott’s history classes were encouraged to enter the contest after Charlotte Christian parent and North Carolina NCSDA member Mrs. Prince Witt shared the opportunity with Mrs. Abbott in the fall. This year’s essay prompt asked students to describe the principles in the Declaration of Independence they believe are most important in lifting the human condition and to explain how they have helped this country meet evolving challenges over 249 years.

Over 20 CCS students applied, and Gavin Lawrence, Avery Elliott, Isabella Araujo and Alexandra Rose-Perez won and were offered scholarships to this summer’s Congressional Seminar, which provides university campus housing, meals, access to world class museums and interactive model Congress committee meetings. Juniors Gavin Lawrence and Alexandra Rose-Perez both plan to attend the seminar in June.

Gavin anticipates learning more about the legislative branch of government, along with the process of getting a bill passed in Congress. “The information in this seminar is very new to me,” Gavin shared, “so I am looking forward to learning more.”

“I am curious and passionate about foreign affairs and public policy,” Alexandra shared. “I am excited to participate in the Model Congress and explore a field I may one day pursue.” Alexandra is also looking forward to building on skills like negotiation and teamwork while meeting a variety of students from around the nation.

We look forward to catching up with Gavin and Alexandra in August and hearing about their experience in D.C.
