|Charlotte Christian's Laps for Love volunteers: Claire Swain, Abbi Snyder and Cate Darling.|
A few Charlotte Christian seventh graders recently rallied their middle school classmates in support of a project that they hold dear to their hearts. Abbi Snyder and Claire Swain are board members for Laps for Love, a local non-profit organization run exclusively by kids that hosts swimming competitions to raise funding for the Charlotte Rescue Mission. One of their friends, Grace Daniels, founded Laps for Love in 2015 and Abbi and Claire joined as board members along with another friend, Riley Buelow. Together, this team of four middle school board members coordinate, organize and run swimming events that have already raised more than $36,000 for the Charlotte Rescue Mission. This small group of powerful young ladies met on a summer swim team and are now making a huge impact in the fight against homelessness and addiction in Charlotte.
Abbi and Claire, along with fellow swimmer and Laps for Love volunteer, Cate Darling, wanted to get their Charlotte Christian school friends on board and organized a middle school competition that encouraged students to bring in donations and each advisory that brought in at least $25 won a dress-down day. In just one week, they raised more than $1,700 through the help of their friends from school. They pledged half of the money to the Charlotte Rescue Mission and the other half to Laps for Love to help fund their next big event which will be held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center in August. This summer, the group hopes to raise $40,000 to help the Charlotte Rescue Mission.
When asked why they are so passionate about helping others through Laps for Love, they gladly shared their thoughts. Abbi Snyder said that she does it "to give back to a community that has given so much to me." Claire Swain, her fellow board member, said "I believe that Laps for Love is important because it shows other children that they can do anything they put their minds to, that they cannot let society tell them they can't because they are kids." Cate Darling felt that, "I can help those less fortunate than us find hope through swimming."
Hats off to all of these young ladies and the way they are using their passion for swimming to spread the love of Jesus to those in need here in their own backyard.
