Charlotte Christian Retires Stephen Curry's High School Jersey
Posted 01/27/2017 01:02PM

Charlotte Christian School was honored and excited to welcome home alum Stephen Curry (’06) for the retirement of his high school basketball jersey on Tuesday, Jan. 24 during halftime of the varsity boys’ basketball game.  Hundreds of Charlotte Christian students and fans cheered as the No. 20 jersey that he wore in high school was unveiled and he was presented with his framed high school jersey.  Stephen was joined by his wife, Ayesha Curry, his daughters, his parents, Dell and Sonya Curry, and other family members.

Stephen came to CCS in middle school when his father, Dell, was playing for the Charlotte Hornets and began his CCS playing career in the Lamb/Johnson Gymnasium as a seventh grader before playing for Coach Shonn Brown and the varsity Knights. As a player he earned All-State and All-Conference honors and helped lead the Knights to three CISAA conference titles and three state playoff appearances.

Stephen graduated in 2006 and signed to play collegiate basketball at Davidson College.  At Davidson he had three record-breaking years, leading the Wildcats to their first NCAA Elite 8 appearance since 1969.

In 2009, Stephen was selected in the seventh round of the NBA draft to play for the Golden State Warriors.  In his first year, he was a contender for the Rookie of the Year award, and in the 2010-11 season, he won the Sportsmanship Award and the Skills Challenge during the 2011 NBA All-Star Weekend.  In 2012 he broke the NBA record for the most three-pointers in the regular season and helped earn the Warriors the sixth seed in the 2013 NBA playoffs.  The following season Stephen made his first All-Star game appearance, and in January of the 2014-15 season, he made his 1,000th three-point field goal to become the fastest player in NBA history to reach this marker.

He won back-to-back NBA MVP awards in 2015 and 2016 and helped lead the Warriors to the NBA Championship in 2015.  Last season he set an NBA record with 402 three-point field goals, topping his own record of 286 set the previous season.  The Warriors also broke the record for most wins in a season.

Stephen’s parents, Dell and Sonya, and his siblings, Seth and Sydel, are long-time members of our community and we are honored to call them all Knights. Seth graduated in 2008 and holds several scoring records for the varsity Knights basketball team and currently plays for the NBA Dallas Mavericks. Sydel graduated in 2013 and played varsity volleyball for the Lady Knights and currently plays volleyball at Elon University.
