Diversity at CCS

Charlotte Christian School is committed to fostering a community of love, compassion, understanding and unity on our campus and in our classrooms. We will look at our curriculum, we will examine our practices, and we will have honest and candid conversations as teachers and administrators. We will ask students and alumni to share their experiences, we will guard our hearts while considering our words, and most importantly we will be on our knees seeking the Lord's guidance.

Our goal is to provide our community with an understanding of cultural competency - the skills and the abilities needed to work together with people of a different ethnicity. We want our students to have self awareness and understand who God created them to be and how they relate to those around them. It is clear from the scriptures that cultural competency is important because Jesus modeled this. Jesus was able to reach out and relate to people of different backgrounds throughout His ministry and He is the ultimate example.

Revelation 7:9, "After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands,"

God Bless,

Action Steps

As we read God's word, we cannot escape the theme of diversity. From Genesis through Revelations, God is calling a diverse group of people to Him and His will. As we teach to the whole child, we will teach your children to embrace diversity because it is part of God's plan for community as well as part of an increasingly globalized world. Below are tangible steps we have taken so far:

June 2020 Head of School Barry Giller sent letters regarding our beliefs around anti-racism to our current parents, employees and alumni.

July 2020 Alumni of Color Advisory Council was created to include recent graduates to share their perspective on the school and how we seek to grow and improve. The alumni council has representation starting from the class of 2011 to current seniors and meets quarterly with the head of school and members of the school's senior staff.

August 2020 Teachers participated in diversity training with Dr. Walter Strickland, an assistant professor of systematic and contextual theology and associate vice president of diversity at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C.

January 2021 Dr. Walter Strickland was invited to speak virtually at two upper school chapels and address questions from the student body about the civil rights movement, Martin Luther King, Jr. and racism in America. Click here to watch a video from one of the chapels.

February 2021 Dr. Walter Strickland provided professional development for our faculty on how to utilize a biblical framework to embrace diversity and nurture unity in our classrooms and in our community. Click here to watch the video.

February 2021 Mrs. Jozi Walker was hired as the school's director of diversity. Mrs. Walker will be responsible for creating intentional space for students of color, coaching faculty as they navigate sensitive topics and partnering with the director of human resources to recruit and retain employees of color.

March 2021 The school hosted a virtual meet and greet with Director of Diversity Jozi Walker for the CCS community to hear her testimony and why she felt called to serve at Charlotte Christian.
