What is athletic training? Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of emergent, acute or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied health care profession.
Who are athletic trainers? Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Athletic trainers work under the direction of a physician as prescribed by state licensure statutes
Steven Palacio is a recent graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While there he pursued dual bachelor’s degrees in Athletic Training and Exercise Science. During his academic career he served as a teaching assistant, was an active member on the academic advisory board and volunteered in several student projects. After graduation he sought certification as an ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist. Steven was hired by Novant Health in 2018 and now serves as a full time Athletic Trainer at Charlotte Christian School.

After completing her undergraduate degree in Athletic Training at UNC Charlotte, Katherine attended California University of Pennsylvania and earned a Master’s degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion. While at CalU Katherine earned her Performance Enhancement Specialist and Corrective Exercise Specialist certifications. Before coming to work for Novant Health, Katherine worked for a non-profit organization called PlaySafe. She provided athletic training services to Pickens High School, in Pickens, SC. She worked at Pickens High School for two years, before coming back to North Carolina. Katherine joined the Novant Health team in June 2018. She serves as a clinic athletic trainer at Novant Health Waxhaw Family & Sports Medicine and also works at Charlotte Christian.
