Purpose

Reading consistently throughout the summer months allows students to:

  • learn new vocabulary
  • broaden perspectives
  • increase their knowledge and maintain reading gains made during the school year
  • develop an understanding that scheduling time for reading is an important life skill

We encourage lower and middle school students to read books in their zones of proximal development or “just right” or “good fit” books. These are books that are appealing to the student and are neither too difficult nor too easy meaning that students understand what they are reading and are familiar with most of the vocabulary.

For upper school students, summer reading prepares them for the academic courses that they will take in the fall. Teachers have specific units and activities planned that will deal with the content of the required books. Teachers may ask students to read, paying attention to specific concepts, themes, ideas, characterization and so forth. It is a good plan to review the assignment prior to reading the assigned book.

Lower School

Lower school students are required to read a minimum of three books during the summer, both fiction and nonfiction books.  The school has not vetted all titles and therefore does not endorse all books from these websites. Please assist your student is making book choices that align with the values of your family.  Here are several websites that offer extensive book choices:

To increase student motivation, the media center provides incentives to readers. To earn incentives, please follow these directions.

Incentives:

  1. To earn an incentive, students must read at least three books.
  2. Record ALL the books you read this summer on the Reading Record Form.
  3. Parents, please sign the Reading Record beside the book title.
  4. Please bring your summer Reading Record to school on the first day of school in August 2012. You may turn your Reading Record in to your classroom teacher.
  5. Teachers will submit the Reading Records to the media center.
  6. READING RECORDS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATER THAN FRIDAY, AUG. 31.

Students who read at least three books will earn a sticker. Additional and/or different incentives will be provided for students who read 10 or more; 20 or more; and 40 or more books.

Middle School

Middle school students in all grades (6, 7, 8) are required to read two Accelerated Reader™ books, one fiction and one non-fiction, of their choice. Students will be given an individual zone of proximal development (zpd) from which they can choose books to read. The (zpd) is determined by a Star Reading™ test given during the final weeks of school. Students must read these two books and successfully pass (score 80 percent or higher) on the corresponding Accelerated Reader™ quiz for each book.

A list of available books, interest level, reading level, and points for each individual book can be found at *www.arbookfind.com.

*Charlotte Christian subscribes to Accelerated Reader Enterprise™. This gives our students access to all current quizzes in order to maximize student choices of books that are both appealing and rigorous. However, the school has not vetted all titles and this subscription does not translate to an endorsement of any book. Please assist your student is making book choices that align with the values of your family.

To complete this assignment, the media center will be available on the following dates and times:

Thursday, June 21 9 - 11 a.m. and 1 - 3 p.m.

Upper School-Required Reading and/or Summer Assignments by Specific Course

For upper school students, summer reading prepares them for the academic courses that they will take in the fall. The quantity of thought-provoking supplementary books that are beneficial to students preparing themselves for college grows every year. Students can use the summer months to their advantage by reading a wide variety of books. Reading prepares students to deal with new ideas and provides a basis for discussion and reflection about a common theme.

Teachers have specific units and activities planned that will deal with the content of the required books. Teachers may ask students to read, paying attention to specific concepts, themes, ideas, characterization and so forth. It is a good plan to review the assignment prior to reading the assigned book.

Each student is required to read the book that is assigned by grade level. Certain courses have additional required reading. If a course has summer assignments, these assignments are also posted with that course. Please click on each course for additional information. If a course is not listed, that course does not have summer reading or summer assignments. All summer reading assignments are due the first day of school, Aug. 21.
