Congratulations to five Charlotte Christian upper school students who have been selected for the prestigious American High School Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. The Honors Performance Series is scheduled for February of 2013 and showcases accomplished high school performers on an international level by allowing them to study under master conductors and perform in the celebrated venue, Carnegie Hall.
Sophomore Chad Damon and senior Lynn Putnam were both selected for the Honors Performance Choir. Senior Scott Ortlip (trombone), sophomore Alex Watkins (percussion), and sophomore Sydney Weaver (clarinet), were all selected for the Honors Performance Band. All five students were nominated by Charlotte Christian music directors and submitted audition recordings as part of the selection process. All have been invited to New York City to participate in the five-day program which will conclude with a concert at Carnegie Hall on Feb. 10, 2013. In the past, two Charlotte Christian students were selected to perform at Carnegie Hall as part of the Honors Performance Series. In 2012, vocalist Shelley Leazer performed and in 2011, bass clarinet player Hayley Buckner performed.
In addition to student honors, Mrs. Jane Mendlik, director of bands at Charlotte Christian School, was also recently recognized by the American High School Honors Performance Series with a Classroom Assistance Grant of $500. Mrs. Mendlik and the Charlotte Christian band program were recognized with the grant because of the achievement, talent, and dedication of her students.
The American High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall recognizes and supports high school music departments through an annual grant. The program is intended to support the instruction and development of high school musicians by providing resources to music teachers.
